What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one of the oldest forms of Eastern medicine.  Approximately 3,000 years old, it treats the whole body rather than just one or two symptoms.  Acupuncture works by accessing qi (chee), which is a form of energy that continuously flows throughout our bodies.  Qi is accessed by needling points that fall along pathways called meridians.  Meridians resemble the circulatory or nervous systems.  In all, there are 12 meridians that flow throughout the body.

Why Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a very gentle and effective form of medicine that does not involve the use of drugs that often have very serious side-effects.  Acupuncture can be used to treat current concerns or as a preventative medicine.  According to the National Institute of Health, acupuncture has been proven effecting for pain management, high blood pressure, coping with the side-effects of cancer treatment, insomnia, and many other things.  Acupuncture can be used in conjunction with western medicine or alone.

What can I expect?

Your first session will last anywhere from an hour and a half to two hours.  During this time your acupuncturist will talk with you in detail about your health and address any concerns you may have.  After a health history has been taken, you will receive your first acupuncture treatment.  All visits after that will last anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour.  Each treatment will be specifically tailored to meet your needs.

After each treatment clients often notice subtle but profound differences.  These include sleeping better, feeling less stressed, reduction in night sweating, more energy, and better concentration (just to name a few).

Do the needles hurt?

Generally, no.  Some points might be tender and it’s possible that you will feel a slight pinch.  But after the needle has been inserted there is no pain.  Acupuncture needles are in no way like the hypodermic needles doctors use.  Each needle is about as thin as a human hair, and each needle is used only once.

Will Insurance cover Acupuncture?

Some insurance plans do, check with your provider to see what they will cover.  As of right now Mika does not accept insurance, but can give you the necessary paperwork to file your claim.  The insurance company will then pay you directly.
